Mountain of the Sun

Where: Zion National Park, Utah
When: October 2005
Partners: Mike Cressman

Mike Cressman working his way up to the MOS-Twin Bros col

Mountain of the Sun was one of the first semi-substantial peaks I did in Zion. With a shortish approach up Upper Pine Creek Canyon, then a drop into Lodge Canyon, fun route-finding leads to a col and then a scramble up an exposed ramp toward the summit.

With a near mishap on the steep slabs leading up to the col on our ascent, I angled back toward Mike Cressman, who'd found safer climbing up a chimney to easier ground, and we made good time to the flattish col. From there, it didn't take long to find our way to the summit. There, awesome views over to The Sentinel, a peak I later failed on (turned back only 100 feet below the top), Lady Mountain (a mountain I've done twice), and others.

MOS is a great and classic Zion peak!
