Ruins & Rivers, Monkeys, Iguanas & Crocs

Where: Belize, Central America
When: 2000

Visiting some jungle ruins in the hilly interior of Belize, I was amazed by the beautiful architecture of the pyramids, covered in moss and vines, rising out of the dense forest as reminders of cultures evolved.

Later, I floated down the Belize River with a local man whose name I forget. Enjoying the calm of the black water, my eyes were drawn to the trees again, searching for the huge orange iguanas that lounged on tree limbs over the river. Crocodiles napped on the shores and howler monkeys called out from highest boughs. A fascinating place.

Enjoying the urban areas of Belmopan and Belize City, it was with regret that I left the country sooner than I'd supposed.
